Specific measureable objectives
To increase the efficiency of migrating fingerling collection and bypass systems. The delay and loss of migrating fingerlings at dams may be significantly reduced if they can be bypassed around such obstructions instead of being forced to pass through them.

Testable hypothesis
Reduction of delays would reduce predation exposure and increase the number of migrants surviving at the ocean. Decreased exposure to increased river temperatures is likely to enhance survival as well.

Exposing fingerlings to sound enhances their probability of rising into a simulated gatewell. thereby providing increased collection without subjecting them to extreme pressures found in the turbine area. The sudden pressure changes occurring within areas of the turbines have been shown to cause serious physical damage and disorientation,
which in turn increase losses due to predation.

Underlying assumptions or critical constraints
Large debris must be removed or deflected upstream of the system.

Methods
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. Physical testing at Battelle Lab or field testing of CFD model. Testing will use test fish, observation of fish responding to system collection. report on effectiveness/efficiency.

I. Final database survey for similar or transferable system equipment.
II. Computational Fluid Dynamics model study (CFD/CAD).
III. Lab or field testing leading to final report.
IV. Installation, Operation and Maintenance tasks. (FY-98)

Related to genetic diversity and wild runs of salmon survival.

Critical uncertainties
Uncertainty will be eliminated or substantiated in the CFD model study.

Summary of expected outcome
Increased efficiency in collection and bypass of migrating fingerlings to improve the survival rate of these threatened or endangered and other species of fish.

Dependencies/opportunities for cooperation
There has been much work by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Marine Fisheries Service. They may be willing to loan equipment and/or facilities which they have available. The National Aeronautical and Space Administration through NASA-Ames Research Center has sent their "Software Of The Year Award" winning computational fluid dynamic three demensional software INS3D to Portland State University's Civil Engineering Department. Prof. Scott Wells and Dr. Shuguang Li their Associate Professors and students will collaborate with Clouston Energy Research.

Monitoring activity
Discussion with Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory's Duane Neitzel regarding the initial test and monitoring tasks has occurred.
