Short Description Adult and juvenile PIT tag recovery data are analyzed to compare survival estimates for transported fish of known origin, downriver stocks, wild and hatchery transported fish and fish handled and not handled at dams.

Biological Outcomes of this project: Improved survival of smolt to adult returns by long term implementation of the findings o f the CSS study. An annual index and monitoring of smolt to adult returns, juvenile survival indices and an information base for long term mitigation and protection measure discussion and implementation.
Biological Data: PIT tag recapture data, travel times, survivals and adult return results will be available in CSS annul reports and in FPC data presentation and tabulations. Smolt to adult return ratios will be available for each year.

Compute annual hatchery survival rates (adjusted for terminal harvest rates) using both CWT and PIT tags for selected upriver and downriver hatchery stocks. CBFWA comment: There is no change in scope of work. Some line item costs such as PIT tag per item cost has decreased.

BPA response: The CSS long-term mark-recapture project has the potential to provide information that will be very helpful to deciding a number of critically important management issues relevant to salmon recovery in the Columbia River basin. The data generated by the CSS is increasing and it is important to complete timely data analysis and reporting of results to the scientific fisheries community. To most efficiently accomplish timely data analysis and reporting of results, it is suggested that the FPC and CBFWA consider adding an analytical staff position to the PSMFC contract under project 199602000. The data analyst would work closely with the Oversight Committee and the technical staff of the FPC.
