Biological Outcomes of this project: Development of an accurate and robust B-IBI will provide a sensitive monitoring tool for obtaining both pre-project baseline information on stream condition and post-project evaluation. This tool will specifically assess general aquatic biological health by measuring indices of food web condition, which integrates impacts of local and sub-catchment scale (proximate and distal) landscape conditions on aquatic systems. This will enable bio-assessment to become a functional component of watershed assessment and thereby further the achievement of the goals of the Fish and Wildlife Program within a normative ecological framework.
Biological Data: The project itself will collect in-stream, site-specific biological data directly essential to the development of the multimetric index of biotic integrity. Specific metric (10 to 12 in all) are attributes of Invertebrate community composition, feeding and abundance, such as total # of taxa present, % predators, % sediment tolerant taxa, # ephemeroptera (mayfly) taxa. Metrics are then compared/related to other features of aquatic habitat condition and to local and catchment-level land condition, uses, and disturbances. These latter data exist from a variety of sources, including YIN, Geology Department, Central Washington University, USFS, BurRec, and Interior Columbia Basin Management Project databases. Aquatic condition as measured by B-IBI will then be related to salmonid fish population conditions (resident and anadromous), which latter data exists in abundance (YIN, WDFW, CBFWA).
